IT Jobs in New Zealand

IT has always been a skills-short sector. Even during the recent economic uncertainty demand for IT skills remained strong and even increased in some areas. It is predicted demand will continue to increase and that shortages could become severe as the workforce ages and because IT is not quite the “glamour” industry it used to be for those undertaking tertiary education. Enrolment in IT courses has been in steady decline.

Demand for IT Jobs

Even though there is such strong demand for IT jobs, organisations are becoming increasingly selective about hiring IT workers. This is because the IT job industry has a reputation for high turnover and that permanent employees are often tempted by the lucrative IT contracting market.

To secure the best IT jobs (permanent) that offer tangible career growth with the best companies, IT job seekers need to demonstrate a genuine interest in the hiring organisation and would be advised to undertake a good level of research about the organisation prior to interview.

As organisations are under increasing pressure to deliver value, IT contractors are often the subject of review. IT jobs and contracts are not as “secure” as they were in the past so IT contractors are advised to be fair about rates and always complete assignments (not change assignments part way through for another). Reliable, talented contractors who charge fairly are rarely out of work.
