  • Asset Advisor
  • Whanganui District Council | Strategic Assets | Permanent
  • $102,000 to $121,000

We’re proud to be exclusively partnering with Whanganui District Council to appoint a newly created Asset Advisor – Financial & Quality role within their Strategic Assets group.
This is a high-impact position for an experienced asset management professional who enjoys sitting at the intersection of financial analytics, compliance, and long‑term asset strategy.

The Opportunity
Reporting to the Strategic Assets Lead, you will play a pivotal role in shaping how Council assets are planned, funded, governed and optimised across their entire lifecycle.
You’ll be trusted as an advisor—using data, financial insight and quality frameworks to support smarter investment decisions, improve asset performance, and ensure assets remain compliant, sustainable and value-driven.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys autonomy, analytical depth, and influencing decision‑makers without having direct staff management responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities
Your remit will span both strategic and operational asset management, including:
  • Developing and maintaining comprehensive asset management plans aligned to the Long-Term Plan
  • Forecasting asset needs and lifecycle requirements to support future service delivery
  • Monitoring and analysing capital and operational expenditure, including lifecycle costing
  • Building financial models and dashboards to inform investment decisions
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, standards and best‑practice asset frameworks
  • Leading quality assurance activities, audits, and data integrity reviews
  • Identifying improvement opportunities to extend asset life and enhance performance
  • Providing clear, credible advice to senior leadership and a wide range of stakeholders

You will ideally offer:
  • 4+ years’ experience in asset or facilities management
  • Strong understanding of asset management principles (NAMS, ISO or similar)
  • Proven experience with financial analysis, lifecycle modelling and reporting
  • A solid grasp of compliance, quality assurance and risk management
  • The ability to communicate complex data clearly to non‑technical audiences
  • A continuous improvement mindset and high attention to detail

Highly regarded (but not essential):
  • A degree in engineering, asset management, business or a related discipline
  • Asset management certification (IAM, NAMS or similar)
  • Experience in local government or public sector environments
  • Exposure to advanced asset management systems and tools

Why This Role?
  • Play a visible, trusted advisory role influencing key investment decisions
  • Enjoy a hybrid work environment
  • Work with grounded and knowledgeable team members
  • Work on assets that genuinely impact community outcomes
