Job Description
We are looking for an experienced Datacom Database Specialist to join a strategic mainframe migration programme. This is a highly specialised role focused on analysing and reverse engineering an existing Broadcom Datacom (Datacom/DB) environment and supporting the migration of legacy data structures to VSAM.
You’ll work across a complex legacy environment, helping the programme understand existing database structures, application dependencies and data flows while ensuring data integrity throughout the migration.
What you'll be doing:
Analyse and document existing Datacom/DB architecture, schemas, relationships and access patterns.
Reverse engineer legacy database designs and application interactions.
Identify Datacom dependencies across PL/I programs, JCL, batch processes and interfaces.
Support the migration and mapping of Datacom/DB structures to VSAM.
Produce technical specifications, data mappings and migration design documentation.
Support data extraction, conversion, reconciliation and validation activities.
Troubleshoot complex database and migration issues.
Work closely with architects, developers, testers and business stakeholders.
Provide technical guidance and leadership throughout the migration lifecycle.
What we're looking for:
Strong hands-on experience with Broadcom Datacom / CA Datacom / Datacom DB.
Solid experience with VSAM and legacy mainframe data structures.
Strong knowledge of z/OS / MVS, JCL and batch processing.
Experience working with or analysing PL/I (PL1) applications.
Previous involvement in database migration, legacy modernisation or reverse engineering initiatives.
Knowledge of database utilities, recovery, data extraction and conversion techniques.
Strong technical documentation and data-mapping capability.
Excellent analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
The ideal candidate:
You'll be a senior Datacom SME who is comfortable navigating complex and potentially poorly documented legacy environments. You'll be able to quickly understand existing database structures, identify dependencies and migration risks, and translate your findings into clear technical documentation.
