NZDF is a unique employer and no two days are ever the same.  The Defence Force exists to secure the well-being of New Zealand and New Zealanders with responses that include providing stability and peace support operations, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and maritime surveillance.

How many employers run their own shipping, airline and land logistics operations?  At the Defence Force you will get an opportunity to work across multiple platforms and engage in a variety of interesting activities that support New Zealand. Defence Force staff are provided with career growth opportunities that would be difficult to match - while working to protect and benefit New Zealand in a culture built around commitment, courage, comradeship and integrity.

Due to growth and change within the NZDF Finance team, we are currently seeking a number of senior finance professionals to join us.  You will be the subject matter expert & key financial influencer and enable the strategic capabilities of the future state of the NZ Defence Force.

What you will do:

You will facilitate the development and understanding of the organisational-wide financial position of the NZ Defence Force.  You will focus on the medium to long term planning horizon (4 - 35 years), complemented by a detailed understanding of the 0 - 4 year environment.

This will be achieved by:

  • Providing accurate and relevant analytics of NZDF’s capability portfolio and strategic modelling
  • Acting as a subject matter expert and key influencer to stakeholders to encourage their buy-in of proposed initiatives
  • Developing the funding needs of major strategic initiatives including the NZDF workforce
  • Collaborating and educating NZDF Finance Leadership on priority areas and functions; and
  • Leading, mentoring and coaching to direct reports

What we need:

This role requires an agile approach; we are looking for a person who can bring their extensive knowledge and technical skillset but understands the complexities of a large scale organisation and can reprioritise based on strategic needs.

You will also have:

  • Extensive practical experience (10 years) in a finance/accounting or similar role in a large organisation, with a minimum of 3 years of senior management experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with a variety of stakeholders with varying levels of technical understanding
  • Proven quantitative and qualitative analytical and evaluative skills, incorporating problem solving, decision-making and creative thinking at a senior level
  • Proven research and learning skills, including ability to identify best practice and apply in practice; and
  • Demonstrated sound work management practices including a logical and structured approach to task/project management

Who we are:

The Organisational Modelling and Costing Team is responsible for the long-term planning for NZDF Finance and ensures alignment between the underpinning assumptions and resulting financials, from short to long term planning horizons (1 to 4 to 35 year planning horizons) and for major strategic initiatives. This team is the centre of excellence for Workforce costing and scenario analysis. It also leads the process through which Vote Defence Force is sustained at the level necessary to deliver outputs consistent with Defence policy.

Every hour of every day, 365 days of the year, the New Zealand Defence Force is contributing to the defence, security and well-being of Aotearoa / New Zealand.  As a modern, professional military, it is our goal to maintain well trained, equipped and disciplined armed forces that can react to crisis at short notice.
