We are currently supporting one of the North Island’s Regional Councils in a search for a Principal Advisor to provide strategic, organisational and operational insights to the Chair and Chief Executive.
 
About the Role: 
Reporting to the CEO, you’ll support the Chair and Chief Executive in maintaining awareness and responsiveness to stakeholder and organisational priorities, urgent or emerging issues and opportunities. You’ll facilitate connections between governance & management to enhance relationships and proactively communicate to identify and resolve issues in a timely manner.



Key responsibilities:
  • Seek, coordinate and/or facilitate strategic advice to the CE, Chair and Governance that reflects an integrated, cross-organisational perspective.
  • Coordinate, analyse and research information to generate responses, advice and/or recommendations on reports and papers received by the Chair and CE.
  • Facilitate and/ or prepare material to support the Chair/Governance/CE (presentations, speeches, briefing notes) as required.
  • Brief Chair, Governance, CE and ELT as required on insights, emerging issues and opportunities, risks and potential implications.
  • Support ELT to focus on and advance strategic organisational priorities through development of agendas and facilitating strategy sessions.
  • Work with the ELT to establish and drive systems and processes to effectively triage, manage, action and monitor timely responses to external and councilor requests and correspondence to the Chair/CE.
  • Ensure reliable, consistent delivery of agreed advice, recommendations or insights that are aligned to the needs of the CE and/or the Chair and Governance.
  • Advise and “sense check” initiatives or issues raised by the Chair and/or CE and ensure they are managed and/or resolved in a timely way.
     
Essential Background, Skills & Experience:
 
  • Relevant degree qualification or experience in law, public policy, political science, commerce or related area.
  • Demonstrable experience of working with and advising senior leadership teams in complex organisations.
  • Proven experience of working effectively within the machinery of government.
  • Deep understanding and ability to work effectively with political decision-makers.
  • Strategic and conceptual thinking skills, creativity and sensitivity to influence through complexity and shape pathways towards resolution and progress.
  • Ability to manage complex working relationships with people at all levels within local and central government, mana whenua partners, stakeholders and the public.
  • Sound understanding of Māori culture and knowledge of tikanaga Māori.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Facilitation and collaboration skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A full and current driver license.
