We're looking for a highly experienced Cloud Data Engineer for a long-term opportunity with a large and complex New Zealand organisation undertaking significant modernisation of its data environment.
This is a senior, technically hands-on position for someone who has operated at Principal level and is comfortable tackling the difficult engineering challenges that come with enterprise-scale data platforms. You’ll have the opportunity to influence how the platform develops, establish strong engineering patterns and provide technical guidance to other experienced engineers.
The environment is heavily Azure focused, so I’m particularly interested in people with strong experience across Azure Databricks, Python, Spark and Delta Lake, ideally gained while building or modernising large-scale data platforms.
Beyond the core engineering skills, you’ll ideally have worked across areas such as cloud migration, DevOps and CI/CD, infrastructure as code, data governance, platform automation and operational reliability.
This would suit someone who still enjoys being close to the technology but has progressed to the point where they’re also setting technical direction, solving broader platform challenges, mentoring others and influencing decisions across multiple teams.
Key experience I’m looking for:

Principal or senior-level cloud/data engineering experience

Strong Azure Databricks, Python and Spark capability

Enterprise-scale data platform design and modernisation

Azure cloud and modern DevOps engineering practices

Terraform / Infrastructure as Code

Strong understanding of data governance and modern data architecture

Experience providing technical direction and mentoring engineers

The ability to work effectively across engineering, architecture and business teams
