About the Team:

Join the government's lead policy advisors on accident compensation. This high performing team partner with ACC and the Treasury to provide policy and regulatory advice on the Accident Compensation Scheme. Their mahi supports the return to work or independence of injured New Zealanders, which in turn contributes to improved worker productivity, social connectivity, and economic growth.

Their work spans strategic, fiscal, and regulatory stewardship issues and involves working closely with ACC and the Treasury, as well as agencies responsible for complementary systems (health, welfare).

This entity takes pride in their reputation for providing comprehensive, connected, free and frank advice at pace. This role can be based in Auckland or Wellington.


The team’s challenges to solve are:

The outcomes of this team’s mahi impacts on all New Zealanders – the Accident Compensation Scheme should cover a broad range of issues, from mental injury and whether its role in rehabilitation is optimal, through to how much the ACC levy impacts the price people pay when they fill their car with petrol.

As such, this team’s work is often at the centre of discussions about the complex relationships between regulation, productivity, and wellbeing. Principal Advisors are key to how they deliver on the Government's objectives while providing free and frank advice, factoring in the interests of their many stakeholders, and upholding the Crown's obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
 

Tēnei tūranga - About the Role:

In this important role, you’ll be working on issues that touch on economic, financial, and social considerations.

Principal Policy Advisors take the lead on complex and high-profile projects. They apply their experience, skills and talent to engage and work collaboratively with stakeholders and Ministers.

They bring their solid understanding of legislative frameworks, policy processes, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Treaty principles, and the wider political environment to help better position Aotearoa's workplaces for the future.

They are part of the policy leadership teams and play a lead role in supporting and
coaching staff.


Who we are looking for - skills and experience required:

We are looking for experienced Principal Advisors who can work across projects in the Accident Compensation Policy team and wider branch. You’ll be comfortable diving in where required to provide intellectual impetus to key projects


You will bring:

· A thorough understanding of the machinery of government.

· Extensive experience in public policy, possibly including working on primary legislation and regulation.

· A good understanding of economic principles and the New Zealand economy.

· Familiarity with New Zealand's legal framework and the principles of statutory interpretation.

· Curiosity and a drive to learn.

· Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand

· Needless to say, we are looking for a team player who will play an active role in building a positive team environment and building talent within your team and the wider branch.

· Ability to manoeuvre comfortably through complex policy advisory processes and Cabinet requirements to achieve the desired outcomes for complex, sensitive or risky policy issues.

· Draw on advanced qualitative and quantitative frameworks, principles, tools and approaches and expert understanding of the range of techniques to monitor and evaluate policy performance.

· The intellectual capability to work with multiple complex ideas in parallel as well as being able to integrate multiple concepts and pathways and deal comfortably with ambiguity.
