  • Duration: 12 months
  • $140,000-165,000 per annum, pro rata

The opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Senior Health & Safety Advisor to provide hands‑on advisory support across a complex construction and estate delivery environment. This is a site‑embedded role focused on enabling safe, compliant and high‑performing construction, planned maintenance and facilities activities.

Working closely with delivery teams, contractors and senior stakeholders, you will translate health and safety frameworks into practical, real‑world application on live sites. This role suits a pragmatic advisor who is confident operating in high‑risk construction settings and coaching others to lift H&S performance.

Key responsibilities
  • Provide on‑the‑ground construction H&S leadership across active projects and maintenance works
  • Undertake contractor assurance activities, including site inspections, targeted audits and verifications
  • Monitor and review contractor H&S performance, escalating and tracking non‑conformances through to close‑out
  • Support and contribute to incident response and investigations, including multi‑PCBU environments
  • Provide expert advice on risk management, high‑risk work and safety by design
  • Support and govern Permit to Work (PTW) and isolation processes, including reviewing and approving complex or escalated permits
  • Review H&S documentation such as H&S Management Plans, JSAs, safety cases and emergency plans
  • Assist with contractor inductions, competency checks and targeted toolbox or refresher training
  • Contribute to continual improvement of H&S systems, capturing lessons learned and promoting a risk‑aware, learning culture
  • Provide day‑to‑day H&S guidance to both site teams and contractors

About you
You are a confident, practical H&S professional with strong construction experience and the ability to influence across multiple stakeholders. You’re comfortable being visible on site, asking the right questions, and making clear, risk‑based decisions - including stopping work where necessary.

Skills and experience
  • Solid knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and construction‑related regulations
  • Proven experience in construction or infrastructure H&S advisory roles
  • Strong understanding of high‑risk work activities (e.g. confined spaces, working at height, excavations, energised systems)
  • Demonstrated experience with Permit to Work systems and contractor management
  • Experience conducting assurance activities, audits and site inspections
  • Competent in incident investigation and driving corrective actions
  • Ability to communicate clearly and build effective working relationships across delivery teams and contractors
  • Sound digital capability (Microsoft 365 and safety reporting systems)

Qualifications
  • Relevant Health & Safety qualification (minimum NZQA Level 4 or equivalent)
  • Incident investigation training – desirable
  • Relevant technical tickets (e.g. Confined Space, Working at Height, Gas Testing) – advantageous
  • Current clean driver’s licence

Additional requirements
  • Ability to work on site in Palmerston North with regional travel as required
  • Flexibility to work outside standard hours when needed
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Confidential security clearance

Why consider this role
  • High‑impact contract role on a large, complex construction estate
  • Opportunity to operate at a senior advisory level and influence real change
  • Varied, hands‑on work in a technically challenging environment
  • Palmerston North–based with strong autonomy and stakeholder engagement
