The Climate Change Commission was established in 2019 to provide expert advice and analysis to the Government on how New Zealand can transition to net-zero emissions by 2050. The first formal work of the Commission is the delivery of the first three emissions budgets and emissions reductions plan by 1 February 2021.
To help the Commission with the development of this work, we have multiple 12 month fixed-term positions for senior policy analysts or experienced policy analysts available. Candidates will be responsible for providing advice on the development of emissions budgets (including advice on climate change mitigation technologies and approaches), based on strong quantitative analysis. Candidates should be able to communicate complex technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
Climate Change in NZ
New Zealand has a unique emissions profile – our highest emissions sources are from land use and transport. We also have the benefit of large amounts of forests which can act as carbon sinks.
In this team you’ll be contributing to the longer term success of the Climate Change Commission through developing the methodology and tools that it could use to establish emissions budgets for New Zealand.
This work will involve analysis of relevant data-sets, analysis of current and emerging mitigations and their potential, and the development and use of models to estimate sector and economy wide emissions.
All candidates must have:
- A qualification in a relevant area
- At least three years relevant post-qualification experience
- Highly developed communication skills - both oral and written - which enable the person involved to deal effectively with key stakeholders and explain complex issues clearly to a range of audiences, including non-technical experts.
