Job Description
This well-established medium-sized commercial contractor has built a strong reputation delivering projects through all market conditions. Their diverse portfolio includes commercial new builds up to $20M, interiors and fit-outs, education projects, major maintenance contracts, and smaller works programmes for long-standing clients.
With a healthy pipeline of secured work and continued growth, they are now seeking an experienced Senior / Lead Quantity Surveyor to take ownership of the commercial function across a range of projects while leading and developing a team of three Intermediate Quantity Surveyors.
This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially astute QS who enjoys both hands-on project delivery and mentoring.
The Role
As the Senior / Lead QS, you will be responsible for overseeing the commercial performance of multiple projects across commercial new builds, education, maintenance, and interiors sectors. You will play a key role in supporting project teams, providing commercial guidance, and ensuring robust financial management across the business.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing project costs and commercial outcomes across multiple projects
- Preparing and reviewing cost reports, forecasts, and financial reconciliations
- Contract administration and ensuring compliance with contractual obligations
- Assessing, pricing, negotiating, and securing variations
- Certifying subcontractor progress claims and managing subcontractor accounts
- Negotiating subcontractor final accounts and resolving commercial disputes
- Identifying project risks and opportunities to maximise profitability
- Leading and mentoring a team of three Intermediate QSs, providing guidance, training, and performance support
- Working closely with Project Managers, Site Managers, and Directors to drive successful project outcomes
- Reporting on commercial performance and providing strategic input to senior leadership
About You
- 10+ years' Quantity Surveying experience within a main contractor environment
- Proven experience delivering commercial interiors construction projects
- Strong understanding of NZ construction contracts and contract administration
- Previous experience leading, mentoring, or managing junior QS staff
- Tertiary qualification in Quantity Surveying or Construction Economics
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills
- Highly developed commercial acumen and financial management capabilities
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- A collaborative leadership style with a focus on team development
