Senior Travel Choice Advisor - 9 month fixed term

Are you passionate about helping people to make safer, healthier, and more active journeys throughout the Wellington Region? Are you a people person with great ideas and energy? Do you thrive on building relationships and inspiring people to make positive changes?

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and highly personable individual to lead programmes of activities and initiatives within the Travel Choice Team, Regional Transport as we gear up to partner with Wellington City Council and the Let's Get Wellington Moving programme. We are a team of dedicated advisors who design and deliver travel demand management and education and training programmes aimed at increasing the uptake and awareness of walking, cycling and public transport across the region.

About the role:

As a Senior Travel Choice Advisor, you will be the Wellington Region's recognised lead on travel behaviour change. You will lead the provision of advice to support travel demand management, and mode shift to public and active transport for the region.

You will proactively identify opportunities that have inherent mode shift potential, and using the best evidence available, lead development of high impact multi-modal programmes to change travel behaviour.

You will engage with community, workplaces, educational institutions, council partners, mana whenua and other stakeholders. You will lead specific projects and the development and implementation of behaviour change marketing and engagement strategies.

You will provide strategic advice on travel behaviour change to Councillors, Greater Wellington business groups and partners, and inform regional transport projects and other strategic programmes including Let's Get Wellington Moving.

As a senior subject matter expert in the Travel Choice team, you will provide mentoring and development for other team members.

About you:

You have a tertiary or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. transport, behavioural science, environmental or resource management, or policy) or an equivalent record of learning and a minimum of five years' related experience.

Your well established professional network and strong relationships will enable you to facilitate joint approaches to regional issues with a focus on collaborative outcomes.

Your passion and enthusiasm inspire others. You will have skills and experience working with our diverse communities.  You will have an opportunity to grow and use your te reo and tikanga Maori skills. You love to learn and are generous in sharing your knowledge and experience with others, adapting your leadership style to meet diverse needs.

Skills and experience:

  • Strategic and conceptual thinking skills to develop solutions to complex problems or explore new opportunities for initiatives.
  • Experience working with senior decision makers in the government, private sector or NGO sectors.
  • Ideally you will bring a detailed knowledge of the theory and understanding of travel demand management or behavioural science methodologies. Knowledge and application of regulatory thinking is desirable.
  • Good understanding of transport policy and planning in the Wellington region.
  • Enquiring mind and willingness to challenge the status quo.
  • Strong understanding/experience of programme and project management.
  • Leadership experience in a change setting is desirable.

About Greater Wellington:

Every day we put all our energy into protecting and enhancing our region. We carefully balance sustainability with economic growth and protection with expansion.

We're a growing and diverse region, and it's our role to protect our environment while also meeting the cultural, social and economic needs of our communities. We're specifically responsible for environment management, flood protection and land management, provision of regional parks, public transport planning and funding, and metropolitan water supply.

It's about dealing with today and planning for the future, especially with the challenges of climate change.

What we offer:
