We are looking for an experienced Payroll Team Leader role to step into a 12 month fixed-term contract within a large, high profile organisation supporting communities across Aotearoa.

This is a hands‑on leadership role suited to someone who enjoys being close to payroll delivery while guiding and developing a small, high‑performing payroll team.

About the role

You’ll be responsible for the day‑to‑day leadership and operational oversight of a high‑volume payroll function. You’ll ensure payroll is delivered accurately, compliantly and on time, while acting as a technical escalation point for complex payroll matters.

Alongside operational delivery, you’ll play an important role in maintaining payroll process documentation, driving quality assurance, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives. The team will work closely with HR, Finance, ICT and external providers on system enhancements, changes and testing.

This role also requires the flexibility to support end‑to‑end pay runs when required and to contribute to activities such as remuneration reviews and collective settlements.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and support a team of Payroll Advisors in a high‑volume environment
  • Oversee day‑to‑day payroll operations and ensure legislative compliance
  • Provide subject matter expertise on NZ payroll and employment legislation
  • Resolve complex payroll issues and manage escalations
  • Maintain and improve SOPs, user guides and payroll documentation
  • Drive quality assurance and continuous improvement across the function
  • Support payroll processing and pay runs as required

About you

You’re an experienced payroll professional who enjoys combining technical expertise with people leadership. You’re confident working at pace, comfortable with complexity, and known for your attention to detail and pragmatic problem‑solving approach.

What you’ll bring

  • Strong end‑to‑end payroll experience within the New Zealand context
  • Solid knowledge of NZ employment and payroll legislation
  • Experience leading, mentoring or coaching others
  • Advanced Excel capability
  • Experience working with payroll systems (PS Enterprise or similar advantageous)
  • Ability to manage sensitive information with absolute discretion
  • Strong communication and stakeholder‑management skills

  • Salary range of $96,000 – $108,000 (pro‑rata)
