This is a pivotal specialist role within a valuesdriven organisation committed to protecting Aotearoa’s unique environment for current and future generations.

About the EPA
The EPA’s vision is clear and compelling: an environment protected, enhancing our way of life and economy. Their kaupapa is grounded in the knowledge that today’s decisions can have lasting impact for generations to come.

The opportunity
As the People Systems & Payroll Lead, you will take ownership of the EPA’s HRIS and payroll environment, shaping how people information is managed, experienced, and leveraged across the organisation.
You’ll lead the continued optimisation of an HRIS with solid foundations, enhancing usability, strengthening configuration, and enabling smarter, more intuitive processes. Your work will improve how managers and kaimahi interact with their information, streamline administrative workflows, and support more insightful, datadriven decision making.

On the payroll side, you will ensure the EPA maintains a highly accurate, compliant, and trusted payroll function. You’ll refine processes, strengthen internal controls, and provide confident, specialist advice that leaders and employees can rely on.
Bringing these functions together, this role sits at the heart of building an integrated, futurefocused people systems environment. You will enable a smoother employee experience, reduce manual effort, and support the EPA to operate more efficiently and effectively.

Key responsibilities
  • Lead the management and optimisation of the EPA’s HRIS and people systems across the full employee lifecycle.
  • Drive continuous improvement, automation opportunities, and smarter workflow design.
  • Develop and maintain a clear system roadmap to guide enhancement and investment decisions.
  • Deliver highquality people reporting and analytics to support organisational performance.
  • Oversee the endtoend payroll function, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and legislative compliance.
  • Maintain and strengthen payroll processes, controls, and documentation.
  • Provide trusted specialist advice to leaders and staff on system functionality, payroll matters, and compliance.
  • Lead payroll audits, remediation work, and business continuity planning.
  • Build, coach, and support a small team, fostering growth and shared expertise.

What you’ll bring
You will be an experienced people systems professional and payroll specialist with a strong understanding of HRIS and payroll operations, compliance, and continuous improvement.
  • Proven experience managing or optimising HRIS platforms (ideally SAP SuccessFactors).
  • Strong endtoend payroll expertise, with preferred experience using MYOB PayGlobal.
  • Sound knowledge of New Zealand employment legislation and payroll compliance.
  • Strength in configuration, testing, data integrity, and system enhancements.
  • High accuracy, excellent judgement, and confidence resolving payroll issues.
  • The ability to produce insightful reporting and analytics.
  • An analytical, solutionsfocused mindset and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • A collaborative, relationshipfocused style, with excellent communication skills.
  • An understanding of Te Ao Māori and integrating this into your practice.

Why join the EPA?
  • Work for an organisation with purpose, impact, and a clear commitment to ensuring Aotearoa’s environment and economy thrive together.
  • Join a genuinely valuesbased and peoplecentred culture.
  • Lead and shape a function with the mandate to lift peoplesystem performance.
  • Contribute to a forwardthinking organisation invested in partnership, sustainability, and longterm outcomes.
