The opportunity
As the People Systems & Payroll Lead, you will take ownership of the EPA’s HRIS and payroll environment, shaping how people information is managed, experienced, and leveraged across the organisation.
You’ll lead the continued optimisation of an HRIS with solid foundations, enhancing usability, strengthening configuration, and enabling smarter, more intuitive processes. Your work will improve how managers and kaimahi interact with their information, streamline administrative workflows, and support more insightful, data‑driven decision making.
On the payroll side, you will ensure the EPA maintains a highly accurate, compliant, and trusted payroll function. You’ll refine processes, strengthen internal controls, and provide confident, specialist advice that leaders and employees can rely on.
Bringing these functions together, this role sits at the heart of building an integrated, future‑focused people systems environment. You will enable a smoother employee experience, reduce manual effort, and support the EPA to operate more efficiently and effectively.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the management and optimisation of the EPA’s HRIS and people systems across the full employee lifecycle.
- Drive continuous improvement, automation opportunities, and smarter workflow design.
- Develop and maintain a clear system roadmap to guide enhancement and investment decisions.
- Deliver high‑quality people reporting and analytics to support organisational performance.
- Oversee the end‑to‑end payroll function, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and legislative compliance.
- Maintain and strengthen payroll processes, controls, and documentation.
- Provide trusted specialist advice to leaders and staff on system functionality, payroll matters, and compliance.
- Lead payroll audits, remediation work, and business continuity planning.
- Build, coach, and support a small team, fostering growth and shared expertise.
What you’ll bring
You will be an experienced people systems professional and payroll specialist with a strong understanding of HRIS and payroll operations, compliance, and continuous improvement.
- Proven experience managing or optimising HRIS platforms (ideally SAP SuccessFactors).
- Strong end‑to‑end payroll expertise, with preferred experience using MYOB PayGlobal.
- Sound knowledge of New Zealand employment legislation and payroll compliance.
- Strength in configuration, testing, data integrity, and system enhancements.
- High accuracy, excellent judgement, and confidence resolving payroll issues.
- The ability to produce insightful reporting and analytics.
- An analytical, solutions‑focused mindset and commitment to continuous improvement.
- A collaborative, relationship‑focused style, with excellent communication skills.
- An understanding of Te Ao Māori and integrating this into your practice.
