Beyond Recruitment is supporting the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment in their search for a permanent Policy Advisor.

This role sits in the Strategy and Evaluation Team which is part of System, Strategy and Performance (SSP) in the Building System Performance Branch. The Building System Performance Branch provides policy and technical advice on New Zealand's building system, rules and standards. They implement building legislation and regulations to grow New Zealand for all. This is an exciting time to join a team whose focus over the past two years has been on building a strong, transparent, and joined-up culture.

Within the branch SSP leads work to implement MBIE’s building system regulatory strategy – Building for the Future.   SSP keeps the branch abreast of international and domestic emerging trends and research in building and construction; ensures there is a strong understanding of the performance and effectiveness of the building regulatory system; and uses insights about these to think through the implications for the design and evolution of the building regulatory system.

The Policy Advisor:

  • Is responsible for supporting the overall capability of the team and SSP more generally.
  • Will gather evidence; analyse policy issues and develop policy options; prepare policy advice for defined policy issues; and contribute to larger, more complex projects where others have the accountability for the delivery of outputs.
  • Be part of a team that will support you to develop into your Policy career.

You will bring:

  • Ability to build requisite knowledge for different policy issues quickly drawing on information and evidence from multiple and diverse sources
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with an eye for detail
  • Ideally knowledge of policy frameworks/principles/tools/approaches and experience in applying these to the analysis of policy issues and formulating high-quality policy advice. However, potential is more important than experience here
  • A collaborative approach to working with others and ideally experience in working effectively with Ministers, public service officials, internal and external stakeholders
  • Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and application of these in public policy and in partnership with Māori
  • A tertiary qualification
