Job Description

We’re seeking a Senior Management Accountant to join a Crown agency that plays a central role in shaping New Zealand’s education system. The organisation works closely with government, providers, and communities to ensure equitable access to education and skills development.
This is a hands-on accounting role with a strong focus on budgeting, forecasting, performance reporting, and financial analysis, but also partnering with key business stakeholders to support the story behind the numbers. You’ll work across directorates to support strategic decision-making and contribute to the financial stewardship of a high-impact public service organisation.

What you’ll be doing:
  • Preparing and analysing annual operating budgets and forecasts
  • Leading month-end processing and variance reporting
  • Providing financial advice and insights to managers and stakeholders
  • Supporting capital and operational projects with financial input
  • Delivering board-level financial reports and commentary
  • Contributing to continuous improvement of systems and processes
  • Supporting financial literacy across the organisation

What we’re looking for:
  • CAANZ-qualified accountant or equivalent
  • Experience in budgeting, forecasting, and project accounting
  • Strong relationship-building skills, especially with non-accountants
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, SUMIF, lookups)
  • Experience with FMIS (TechnologyOne preferred)
  • Ability to incorporate tikanga and te reo Māori into planning and practice
  • Strong communication, organisation, and time management skills

This is a meaningful opportunity to contribute to a public sector organisation that’s shaping the future of education in Aotearoa. You’ll be working across accounting and business partnering with a strong accounting and finance team that champions equity, innovation, and service to the community.
