Data Engineer – Data Quality Focus
Location: Wellington, NZ (Hybrid – 2–3 days/week in office)
Contract Duration: Full-time, Fixed Term for 12 months
About the Programme
A major transformation programme is underway to modernise core systems and services, enabling more responsive, people-centred delivery across New Zealand. This programme is focused on improving data maturity and readiness for large-scale migration and integration activities.
The programme spans multiple workstreams, including Information, Data, and Analytics, and aims to deliver future-ready services through redesigned processes and enhanced technology platforms.
The Opportunity
We’re looking for a Data Engineer with a strong focus on data quality to support a foundational phase of this transformation. This isn’t a traditional engineering role, it’s about ensuring poor-quality data doesn’t get migrated or embedded into new systems.
You’ll act as a Data Quality Analyst, triaging and resolving data issues, working closely with business stakeholders, and helping clean up the data landscape before anything else moves forward.
Key Responsibilities

Identify, track, and resolve data quality issues across legacy systems

Monitor data flows and pinpoint where breakdowns occur

Collaborate with business teams to understand data pain points

Provide practical solutions to improve data quality and integrity

Document issues, resolutions, and repeatable patterns

Support planning and execution of future data migrations.
Key Deliverables

Data quality issue logs and resolution plans

Source-to-target data flow maps with quality checkpoints

Stakeholder engagement outputs and feedback loops

Recommendations for improving data quality across system

Documentation of procedures and repeatable remediation patterns.
About You
You’re a proactive, detail-oriented data professional who thrives in complex environments. You understand how data flows through legacy systems and can spot where things go wrong, and more importantly, how to fix them.
Essential Skills & Attributes:

Strong experience in identifying and resolving data quality issues

Ability to work independently and triage problems across systems

Clear communicator who can engage with technical and business teams

Comfortable navigating legacy environments and ambiguity

Experience with tools like Informatica, Snowflake, or Azure is a bonus
-
Familiarity with dimensional modelling concepts is helpful.
